Arkansas is located in the Southern region of the United States. It became a state on June 15, 1836 and became the twenty-fifth state of the United States. Arkansas is bordered by six states; Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and the Mississippi with its eastern border largely defined by the Mississippi River. Its major rivers are the Arkansas River and the Mississippi river and its major lakes are the Lake Ouachita and Bull Shoals Lake. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state. The state bird is the Mockingbird, and its flower the Apple Blossom. The nickname for the state, ‘The natural State’ was adopted because Arkansas is known throughout the country for its natural beauty, clear lakes and streams and abundance of natural wildlife. Interestingly, Arkansas is also the birthplace of William Jefferson ‘Bill’ Clinton, the forty-second president of the United States. Before his presidency, Clinton served nearly twelve years as the fortieth and forty-second Governor of Arkansas.
The name Arkansas originated from the Quapaw (Sioux) word ‘acansa’, which means
‘downstream place’ or ‘south wind’. The official state flag of Arkansas was chosen in a design competition in 1913 and the design was finalized in 1926. The diamond shapes in the center represent the diamond gemstone, as Arkansas is the only state in America where diamonds have been found. The twenty-five stars represent Arkansas as the twenty-fifth state to join the Union. The blue star on top of ‘Arkansas’ represents the Confederacy of which Arkansas was a member. The three stars below represent Spain, France and the Unites States, all countries that have rule Arkansas.
It was at the end of the sixteenth Century, that the Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto became the first European to step foot on Arkansas. Prior to his arrival and the European settlement some Native American tribes who lived in Arkansas were the Quapaw, Caddo, and Osage nations. The state became part of the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Arkansas was widely known for its position as a slave state, ranking thirteenth in the country. The enslaved African-Americans were held in places such as Delta, to cultivate cotton. At one stage the amount of slaves in the state amounted to just over twenty-five percent of the population.
Arkansas would only join the Confederate States of America after President Lincoln called for troops to respond to the Confederate attack in North Carolina. The state withdrew from the Union on May 6, 1861. However, in June of 1868, The Congress restored Arkansas to the Union under the Military Reconstruction Act. This legislation established a public education system and other issues to help improve the state and its population. Following this act, many more immigrants began to flow into the state. The Delta region recruited foreign men for farming, however these men never remained for long as they quickly became small merchants in towns surrounding the Delta region.
The state enjoys all four seasons with extraordinary color in spring and autumn.
Arkansas typically gets pleasure from a humid subtropical climate. Generally, Arkansas has very hot, humid summers and mild, slightly drier winters. However, Arkansas is also known for its infrequent extreme weather conditions. It experiences about sixty days of thunderstorms. Tornadoes are also a common occurrence in the state. In fact some of the most destructive tornadoes in the United Stated have occurred in Arkansas.
The major industries in which the state is involved is agriculture of chickens, soybeans, rice and cotton, paper and wood products including furniture, electronic equipment and mining of aluminum and diamonds.
Arkansas has a fair sized population. In 2006 Arkansas had an estimated population of 2, 810 872, an increase of 1.1% from the year before. Immigration from outside the United States resulted in a net increase of 21,947 people, and migration within the country produced a net increase of 35,664 people.
Arkansas is a beautiful and rewarding destination for business or pleasure. The state annually attracts visitors from across the nation and out of the country. This is mainly due to its outdoor adventure and natural beauty including its waterfalls and tour-caverns, wild caving experiences, scenic drives and forested mountain trails. Arkansas also boasts art galleries, live theatre, irresistible restaurants and live entertainment at music festivals and clubs. Its recreational activities include hunting, fishing and boating. The Arkansas State Parks are also quite a popular attraction for the tourist that enjoys nature.
The state also hosts many Museums. The Arkansas Air Museum, Arkansas Museum of Automobiles and Arkansas Museum of Discovery are all very well known Museums located in Arkansas.
