Cities in Arizona

Located in the southwestern region of the U.S.A, Arizona is home to 6.5 million residents and in 2006 it was reported as the fastest growing state in the U.S. The capital and largest city is Phoenix while Tucson is second. Arizona is one of the “Four Corner” states it borders New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and California and touches Colorado and has an international border with Mexico.

The origins of the name Arizona still remained unresolved to this day with historians supporting either the Basque phrase (aritz ona) “good oak” or the O’odham phrase (ali Sonak) “small spring”. On February 24, 1863 the Arizona Territory was declared in Washington, D.C. The names “Arizonia”, “Gadsonia”, “Montezuma”, and Arizuma had also been strong contenders for the fledging Territory. Arizona was the 48th state to enter the union on February 14, 1912.

Up until the latter part of the 19th century most of the central and northern parts of Arizona remained uninhabited. However in the 1990’s it was the second fastest growing state in the country mainly due to the Phoenix metropolitan area increasing by 45% in the decade and is home to almost 2/3 of the states population total. Due to the huge influx of new residents the state’s water resources have been placed under serious strain.

Arizona’s history is steeped in the traditions of America’s Old West and stories of legendary Indian chiefs Geronimo and Cochise leading the charge against the frontiersmen are intertwined with the establishment of the state. America’s most famous shoot out took place in Tombstone with the gunfight at the O.K Corral and today Arizona is represented by 14 tribes of U.S. Indians on 20 reservations.

The Grand Canyon along with The Barringer Meteorite Crater, the Petrified Forest, Hoover Dam, national parks and Indian reservations are located within the state. The Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is located mostly within the borders of the Grand Canyon National Park. The canyon was formed by the Colorado River cutting a channel over the course of millions of years.

Located amidst the high plains of the Colorado Plateau is The Barringer Meteorite Crater. The “Meteor Crater” is almost a mile wide and 570 feet deep and attracts many visitors as it is one of the most well-preserved meteorite impact sites on Earth.

The most important industry in the state is manufacturing. Electrical, communications and aeronautical items are the chief products. Half of the country’s copper is produced in Arizona. The state also relies heavily on agriculture with the top commodities being cattle, diary products and cotton.

Arizona is represented by several professional sporting organizations such as the Arizona Cardinals (NFL), Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB), Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Coyotes (NHL), Phoenix Mercury (WNBA) and the Arizona Rattlers (AFL).
