California, located on the west coast of the U.S.A., is the most populous state; housing 36.8 million residents. It is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, the Mexican state of Baja California to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Eight of the nation’s fifty largest cities are located within its borders. Famous for its entertainment industry it is home of “Hollywood” and major music record labels as well.

The word California originally referred to what is currently the state of California plus the whole or parts of Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Arizona and the Mexican peninsula of Baja California.

A major tourist destination that includes Kings Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Orange County, Sequoia National Parks, San Diego Zoo, Redwood Coast, Silicon Valley and the vineyards of Sonoma and Napa. Anaheim is home of the world’s most famous theme park, Disneyland.

The centerpiece of California however is the capital Los Angeles and is the known as “the city that never sleeps”. The entertainment capital of the world the city is inundated with overseas visitors that see it as the number one tourist destination in the U.S.A.

In 2007 the state was responsible for 13 percent of the countries gross domestic product and had the largest gross state product at approximately $1.8 trillion. The largest economic sectors are trade transportation, and utilities; government; professional and business services; education and health services; and leisure and hospitality. Californians love their sport and the state is represented by nineteen national sporting franchises including the L.A. Lakers (NBA), San Francisco 49er’s (NFL), L.A. Dodgers (MLB), L.A. Sparks (WNBA) and the Anaheim Ducks (NHL). The state had the honor of hosting the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley Ski Resort and the 1994 FIFA World Cup. California is cultural diverse state with the population made up of 42.3% White (not including White Hispanic), 36.6% are Hispanic or Latino (of any race), 12.5% Asian, 6.7% Black or African American, 2.6% Multiracial and 1.2% American Indian.
