Nicknamed the “Sunshine State”, Florida is located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is the 4th most populous state housing some 18.3 million residents. The state capital is Tallahassee and the most populous metro area is Miami. Residents of Florida are known as “Floridians”. Bordered by Alabama to the northwest and Georgia to the North most of the land mass of the state is a large peninsula with Gulf of Mexico to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

According to archaeological evidence Florida was inhabited for thousands of years previous to any European settlers reaching its lands. The Ais the Apalachee, the Calusa, the Timucua and the Tocobago tribes are the largest known indigenous peoples in these times.

Florida received its name from Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León in honor of the Spanish term “flowery Easter” due to the fact that he discovered the territory six days after Easter and still during Pascua Florida (flowery Easter Season).

Florida was diplomatically gained by Great Britain in 1763 through the Peace of Paris and the colony was divided into East Florida and West Florida. However Spain in 1783 gained control of the two Florida’s after the British loss to the American colonies in the “War of Independence” and the Treaty of Versailles. In 1819 Spain ceded Florida to the United States for the terms of the American renunciation of any claims on the state of Texas that they had from the Louisiana Purchase and an additional $5 million dollars.

In 1845 Florida became the 27th State of the United States of America they declared succession ten days before the civil war in 1861 and had their congressional representation restored in 1868, three years after the war ended.

The GDP of Florida is the currently the fourth highest in the country. The leading contributors to the gross output of the state are general services, financial services, trade, transportation and public utilities, manufacturing and construction.

Tourism makes up the largest sector of the state economy. The warm climate coupled with vast stretches of beaches attracts approximately 60 million visitors to the state each year. Orlando makes up the significant portion of the states tourism. The largest vacation resort in the world is the Walt Disney World Resort which consists of four theme parks and more than 20 hotels. The citrus production of the state is the largest in the U.S. and the second largest industry in Florida.

The state is represented by the Miami Dolphins (NFL), Miami Heat (NBA), Florida Marlins (MLB) and the Florida Panthers (NHL) among their 15 professional sporting franchises in the state. The state is where several teams spend spring break and spring training. Auto racing, golf and tennis are hugely successful in the state as well.
