Georgia is located in the southeastern part of the U.S.A. It is home to some 8.2 million residents. It is bordered by Florida to the south, Alabama to the west, Tennessee and North Carolina to the north and South Carolina to the southeast. The entire coastline of Georgia is on the Atlantic Ocean and borders to the southeast. Georgia became a state in 1788 and was one of the original colonies to rebel against Britain in 1776. It was home of the Olympic Games in 1996 and the novel and movie “Gone with the Wind” was set in its capital Atlanta.

Britain and Spain were locked in a battle to gain control of the territory as early as 1670. After many battles between the British and Spanish allied Indians and attacks on Spanish missionaries the British claimed the colony. In 1724 the British were recommending to call the territory the Province of Georgia in honor of King George the second.

Georgia was founded in 1732 and in 1733 113 settlers aboard the Anne settled in what is now the city of Savannah. The group were sent their as a chance to establish themselves as “worthy citizens” as they were the “worthy poor” given a second chance by philanthropists from Britain.

In 1752 Georgia became a Crown Colony with a governor appointed by the King. In 1776 the state was one of the thirteen colonies that signed the Declaration of Independence and revolted against Britain. However Georgia being one of the newest states didn’t have the appropriate militia and Savannah fell into British hands until after the war. Also the states large slave population saw it as chance of freedom and joined forces with the British and took the diversion of war as chance to move to the Caribbean and Great Britain.

In 1788 Georgia became the fourth state of the United States of America. In 1861 Georgia joined the Confederacy and the state was a major battlefield during the civil war. The state was severely damaged due to the massive battles and fires that took place during this time. They were the last state admitted back into congress in 1870.

Atlanta is essential to the prosperity of the state and the major industries are communications, industry, transportation, tourism, and government. Agriculture is a major industry with peanuts, corn, and soybeans across middle and southern Georgia. The state is number one in the world’s production of the pecan with Albany being the capital of its supply. Gainesville proclaims to be the worlds Poultry Capital.

The state is represented in all national major professional leagues including the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. Augusta, Georgia is home of the worlds premier golf tournament “The U.S. Masters” each year.

The Girl Scouts of America were founded in the state also in 1912 when 18 girls met in Savannah for the first meeting.
