Cities in Hawaii

Hawaii is the only U.S. state made entirely up of islands and is the newest of the 50 states being admitted to the union in 1959. It is located on an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental Untied States and is southeast of Japan and northeast of Australia. The population is estimated at 1.3 million with the capital being Honolulu on the island of O’ahu. The state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic “Hawaiian Island Chain”.

The earliest evidence of habitation is as early as 300 BC probably by the Polynesians from the Marquesas. The second major wave of migration took place during the 11th century from Raiatea and Bora Bora. The British explorer James Cook was the first European to make contact with the islands in 1778.

Cook named the islands the Sandwich Islands in honor of the 4th Earl of Sandwich even the natives still named them Owyhee. On Cook’s second visit to the islands he attempted to abduct the King of the Big Island of Hawaii, the supporters of the King fought back and killed Cook and four of his Marines.

The Hawaiian Islands received many European visitors after Cook’s visit and the early British influence can be seen with the design of the local Flag of Hawaii with the Union Jack in the corner.

The population dropped dramatically due to the diseases such as influenza, small pox and measles couldn’t be resisted by the native Hawaiians. In the 1850’s alone one fifth of Hawaii’s people died from measles.

In 1795 a series of battles between chiefs who were constantly seeking more power ended. The cession of the island of Kaua’i was forced in 1810 and all the inhabited islands were placed under the single rule of King Kamehameha the Great. He established the House of Kamehameha which dynasty lasted until 1872.

Christian missionaries arrived in the early 19th century and converted much of Hawaii to Christianity. They influenced Kamehameha II to end human sacrifice, while Kamehameha III became the first Christian king.

The Territory of Hawaii was established in 1898 and in 1900 they were granted self governance. Hawaii was the 50th and last state admitted to the Union in 1959.

Hawaii was rapid in its modernization via construction and the huge fast growing tourism industry. The state program of the 1970’s promoted Hawaiian culture along with the promotion of the indigenous language and culture.
