Cities in Illinois

Illinois is the most populous Midwestern state and 5th most populous state housing some 12.9 million residents. Springfield is the capital and Chicago is the most populous city with 66% of the states residents living there or the surround. The population is the demographically diverse in the Midwestern region. Illinois is an important transportation hub. The state is viewed as microcosm of the United States and has been labeled the “most average state”. Three U.S Presidents have been elected while living in Illinois, Lincoln, Grant and Obama.

The name Illinois is the modern spelling for what the French missionaries and explorers gave for the Illinois people. The area was inhabited continuously for several thousands of years before European settlement.

The French first explored the Illinois River in 1673 and Illinois was part of the French Empire until 1763 when the territory was handed to the British. There were no British settlers though and only a handful of troops were sent to the area. In 1778 Illinois County was claimed for Virginia by George Rogers Clark and was ceded to the United States of America after the end of the War of Independence in 1783 and became part of the North West Territory.,/p>

The Illinois Territory was created in 1809 and became a state in 1818. Slavery was used to establish the Territory but when it became a state fierce debate saw it outlawed.

Today the demographics of the area are diverse in their heritage with German ancestry making up over 20% of the population and only 6% being of English ancestry.

In 2007 the total gross state product would see it ranking among the top 20 economies of the world if it were an independent nation. The leading manufacturing industries of the state are chemical manufacturing, food manufacturing, fabricated metal products, plastics and rubber products, transportation equipment and computer and electronic products. The agriculture of the state is made primarily of corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle and diary products.

Chicago is home to several national sporting franchises such as the Chicago Cubs (MLB), the Chicago White Sox (MLB), Chicago Bulls (NBA), Chicago Bears (NFL) and the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) who are one of the original six teams. Illinois motor racing tradition is long and they have hosted NASCAR, CART and IRL races.
