Cities in Indiana

Located in the Great Lakes region, Indiana is home to 6.3 million residents. The capital and most populous city is Indianapolis. Local residents are known as “Hoosiers”. The state’s name means “Land of the Indians”. The state is home of many great sporting franchises such as the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers and the largest single day sporting event in the world “The Indianapolis 500 motor sports race”.

The first known inhabitants to live in the area were the Paleo-Indians circa.8000 BC at the conclusion of the Ice Age. They were nomads who were known for hunting large game. They were followed by a long list of Native American civilizations which included the archaic period, then the Adena people and Hopewell people whom created many towns and dwellings.

The French were the first to enter the territory in the latter part of the 17th century. French fur traders came with jewelry, blankets, tools and whiskey to trade for furs with the Native Americans. By 1732 this resulted in three French trading posts being established Wabash River to control the lucrative trade. By the 1750’s the British wished to manage the routes and fought the French for control with the Native Americans siding with the French. However at the conclusion of the war the British had expelled the French from their land westward of their colonies and the rule was falling to the British.

With the end of the Revolutionary War the British had to cede their territories to the newly formed United States of America under the Treaty of Paris. However this treaty didn’t include the Native Americans who lost their territory unjustly with the succession. In 1787 the present day state of Indiana became part of the North-West Territory. In 1800 Congress separated Ohio from the territory leaving it to become Indiana Territory. With the separation of Michigan and the formation of the Illinois Territory the area of the Indiana Territory was at its present day size. In 1816 it became the 19th state to enter into the Union.

The economy of the state today is heavily relying on manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, biopharmaceutical employment and agriculture. Indiana is located within the “Corn Belt” and produces corn for cattle and hog feed. Other major crops include soybean, melons, tomatoes, grapes, mint, popping corn, and tobacco.

The sporting history of Indiana is steeped with an extensive history in auto racing and is the host of the Indianapolis 500 (The Greatest Spectacle in Racing). In 1925 high school basketball was first played in the state. Today many professional sporting franchises are representing Indiana like the Indiana Pacers (NBA), Indianapolis Colts (NFL), along with several other codes like soccer and hockey.
