Named the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the “Bluegrass State” it is located in the East Central region of the U.S.A. It is one of four states constituted as a commonwealth.

Kentucky is home to some 4.3 million residents and the Louisville is the most populous city and Frankfort is the state capital. Originally it was part of Virginia but in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union.

The world’s longest cave system the “Mammoth Cave National Park” lies in Kentucky. The largest number of deer and turkey per capita in the country are found here. The nation’s most productive coalfield is also within its borders.

The “Kentucky Derby” is held in Kentucky and is one of the U.S.A.’s most prestigious thoroughbred races. Kentucky is also noted for its bourbon distilleries, automobile manufacturing, college basketball and tobacco.

Native Americans inhabited the area from at least 1000 BC to about 1650 AD. However the European explorers found no major Indian settlements in the region. It was used more for hunting by the northern Shawnees and the southern Cherokees.

With more settlers entering the area war broke out with the Indians, as they saw their traditional hunting grounds encroached upon. According to U.S. government in 1790, 1500 Kentucky settlers had been killed in Indian raids. An expedition of 1,200 drafted men was led against the Shawnee towns on the Wabash River in 1786. This was one of the first actions of the Northwest Indian War.

At the end of the American Revolution the counties of Virginia that lied beyond the Appalachian Mountains became known as Kentucky County. The residents of Kentucky County petitioned for separation from Virginia. In 1790 Kentucky delegates accepted the terms of separation and a state constitution was drafted in April 1792. In June 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state admitted to the Union.

During the Civil War the state was officially “neutral” and had sympathizers for both sides of the war.

The major agricultural outputs for Kentucky are horses, cattle, tobacco, dairy products, hogs, soybeans, and corn. Transportation equipment, chemical products, electric equipment, machinery, food processing, tobacco products, coal, and tourism are the major industrial outputs of the state.
