Cities in Mississippi

Located in the south of the U.S.A., Mississippi is home to 2.9 million Americans. The states capital city is Jackson which is also the largest and most populous. The states name comes from the Mississippi River which flows alongside the western boundary. The states catfish aquaculture farms produce the majority of the catfish consumed in the U.S.A. The states symbol is the magnolia tree. Outside the Mississippi Delta area the rest of the state is heavily forested.

Mississippi is bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by Louisiana and a narrow coast on the Gulf of Mexico and on the west, across the Mississippi River by Louisiana and Arkansas.

12,000 years ago Paleo-Indians arrived in the South. These people are called the Mississippians who were Mound Builders and some of their large earthworks still stand throughout the Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Chickasaw and Choctaw are among the descendant Native American tribes, other tribes who inhabited the area include the Natchez, the Yazoo and the Biloxi.

In 1540 the first major European expedition into the territory was that of Hernando de Soto, however the first settlement was not until 1699 when the French established one at Fort Maurepas.

The next decades saw the Spanish, British and French rule with colonial governments. In 1763 after the French and Indian War the French deeded the Mississippi area to the British under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.

Following the American Revolution the area became part of the newly formed United States of America. In 1798 the Mississippi Territory was organized from land ceded by Georgia and South Carolina. It was later expanded twice and claimed by Spain as well as the U.S. During the first 30 years of the 19th century the U.S. purchased lands from the Native American tribes for the new settlements of Americans. In 1817 Mississippi was the 20th state to enter the union.

By 1860 55% of the states population was made up of slaves with only 1000 people of color being free. The planters of the area accumulated much wealth and political power and were desirous for succession. It was the second state to declare succession in1861 and one of the founding members of the Confederate States of America. Mississippi was restored to the union in 1870.

The state has the lowest per capita income of any state in the country but has one of the nation’s lowest living costs. Mississippians rank as one of the highest per capita in charitable contributions.

Due to the intense focus on the plantation economy industrialization did not come to most areas until the late 20th century. Most of the planter aristocracy kept the tax structure low for their own gain and only made private improvements to their own properties leaving the state lacking in infrastructure such as public schools, roads and railroads. Away from the riverfronts most of the state was undeveloped.

In the 1990’s the legislature’s decision to legalize gambling has led to economic gains for the state. Small towns and many in the rural sector are struggling and 100, 000 residents have left in search of work.
