Cities in New Hampshire

Located in the New England region of the northeastern U.S.A., New Hampshire is home to 1.3 million Americans. The state capital is Concord and the largest city in the state is Manchester. The state was named after the English county of Hampshire. It borders Massachusetts to the south, Vermont to the west, Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. It was one of the original 13 states that formed the United States and was the first colonial sovereign nation to break off from Great Britain in January 1776. New Hampshire is the first state to have its own state constitution. The state is nicknamed “The Granite State”.

Prior to European settlement various Algonquian tribes inhabited the area. In the beginning of the 17th century English and French explorers visited New Hampshire. In what is present day Rye, English fishermen settled in 1623.

New Hampshire was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule. It was the first state to declare independence and the only battle fought there saw the rebellion land large amounts of weapons and gun powder. New Hampshire was the ninth state to enter the union in 1788.

Diary products, nursery stock, cattle, apples and eggs are the main agricultural outputs in the state. Machinery, electric equipment, rubber and plastic products and tourism are the main industrial outputs of New Hampshire.

During the last century the states economic base shifted from the traditional textile manufacturing, shoe-making, and the small machining due to obsolete plants and the lure of cheaper wage conditions down south. Efforts are underway currently to diversify the states general economy.

New Hampshire is one of the lowest users of energy and ranks as one of the lowest consumers of electricity in the country, mainly due to the temperate climate and the low reliance on air-conditioning.

New Hampshire has neither a general sales tax nor personal state income tax, income from dividends and interest is taxed at 5% and the controversial state wide property tax which has some of the nation’s highest property taxes.
