Located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.A., New Jersey is home to approximately 8.7 million Americans. The state capital is Trenton and the largest city being Newark. It is bordered on the north by New York, and to the east, the Hudson River, Sandy Hook Bay, Long Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Delaware borders New Jersey only on the southwestern side, and Pennsylvania lies to the west of New Jersey. New Jersey lies largely within the sprawling metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia.

New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the U.S. Swedes and the Dutch were the first European settlers to the area after the Native Americans inhabited for 2,800 years. The name was taken form the English Channel island Jersey. New Jersey was the site of many decisive battles fought during the American Revolutionary War. Factories opened in the 19th century in the state helped drive the “Industrial Revolution”.

Native Americans originally settled in New Jersey, the Lenni–Lenape tribe being the leading one when the Europeans arrived. The Dutch were the first to encounter them in the early part of the 17th century; their relationship was based on the fur trade. The Dutch claimed most of New Jersey although the Lenape didn’t recognize the principle of land ownership. In 1664 the entire territory was English owned after an English fleet sailed in what is today New York Harbor and was met with little resistance.

Since its origins New Jersey has been ethnically and religiously diverse. Presbyterians, Dutch Reformed and Congregationalists lived large land owners the Quakers and the Anglicans. With a tolerant religious policy coupled with rich and fertile soil the colony attracted settlers and boasted a population of 120,000 in 1775.

The land between the Hudson River and Delaware River was granted to loyal subjects who remained loyal to the king during the English Civil War. The area was named the Province of New Jersey. Settlement on the Hudson River side predominately came from the New England side for the first ten years while the other half was sold to the Quakers in England.

In 1702 after 28 years of separate government the two colonies were reunited under a royal governor. Due to bribery and corruption Lord Cornbury was recalled to England and New Jersey was governed by New York. However in 1738 New Jersey received its own governor after locals expressed outrage over New York being favored.

The colony was one of the thirteen that revolted against British rule. New Jersey representatives Richard Stockton, John Witherspoon, Francis Hopkinson, John Hart, and Abraham Clark were among those who signed the United States Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary War British and American armies crossed the state many times and numerous pivotal battles were fought in the region.

New Jersey became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution in1787 and the first to ratify the Bill of Rights in the newly formed Union in 1789. In 1804 it became the first state to abolish new slavery and passed legislation that phased out existing slavery.

The state enjoys the 2nd highest Per Capita personal income in the U.S. Nine of the ten counties in New Jersey is among the top 100 wealthiest in the U.S., while the state also has the highest percentage of millionaire households.

New Jersey's economy is centered on the pharmaceutical industry, chemical development; telecommunications, food processing, electric equipment, printing and publishing, and tourism are the centre of the states economy.

The major agricultural outputs are nursery stock, horses, vegetables, fruits and nuts, seafood, and dairy products.
