Located in the South Central region of the U.S.A., Oklahoma is home to 3.6 million Americans. The state capital is Oklahoma City which is also the largest and most populous of the state.

The states name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning “red people”. The states unofficial nickname is “The Sooner State” and the residents are known as “Oklahomans”.

The state is well known for being a major producer of natural gas, agriculture and oil.

The state has one of the fastest growing economies in the country with is economic strength in biotechnology, energy, telecommunications and aviation.

The state is the 20th largest in the country covering just less than 70,000 square miles. It is one of the six states on the Frontier Strip and it also partially lies in the Great Plains. Arkansas lies by the east along with Missouri, on the north by Kansas, on the northwest by Colorado, on the far west by New Mexico, and on the south and near west by Texas.

As early as last ice age native peoples traveled through the area but the first permanent inhabitants lived in communities near the Arkansas border between 850-1450 AD.

The first known European to travel through the area was the Spaniard Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in the 1541. French explorers claimed the area in the 18th century and the French ruled the area until the year 1803. The United States took control of Oklahoma under the Louisiana Purchase when the government bought all the French territory west of the Mississippi.

Thousands of Native Americans were removed from their homelands across North America and transported to the area including and surrounding present day Oklahoma during the 19th century, this relocation became known as the “Trail of Tears”.

During the period of 1866-1899 cattle ranchers who needed to meet supply demands for food in the eastern cities drove their product northward to the Kansas railroads who had promised the deliveries, by 1881 four of the five major cattle trials passed through Indian Territory. The U.S. Government divided the lands of individual tribes thus freeing up land to be purchased by outside settlers and the railroad companies.

Oklahoma was established as the 46th state in the Union in 1907 previous attempts to create an all-Indian state failed twice but laid the groundwork for the Oklahoma Statehood Convention in 1905.

Many African American towns thrived in the early part of the 20th century as black settlers from neighboring states moved there. Despite the heavy presence of the KKK the town of Greenwood became the most prosperous African American community in the U.S. In 1921 Tulsa was the location of race riot which resulted in over 300 deaths. Many of the black towns are abandoned nowadays however Boley and Langston still are currently thriving.
