Cities in Oregon

Located in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S.A., Oregon is home to 3.8 million Americans. The state’s capital is Salem and the largest and most populous city is Portland. Oregon became the 33rd state admitted to the Union in 1859.

The largest for-profit employer is Intel located in the Silicon Forest area. Oregon has a diverse landscape which includes the windswept Pacific Coastline, the volcanoes of the Cascade Mountain Range, high desert through the eastern portion of the state and lush evergreen forests.

For 15,000 years humans have inhabited the area that today is known as Oregon. In annuls of recorded history the land has been mentioned as early as the 16th century. European powers contended over the land for the better part of the 18th and 19th centuries. The United States began to quarrel over the possession of the region until 1846 when the U.S. and Great Britain divided the region. Oregon was established as a state in the year 1859.

The state was founded as a refuge from the disputes over slavery that had caused so much problems in Kansas. There was a ‘whites only” clause in the state Constitution at the time of its admission. Due to the proliferation of the railroads, the states lumber and wheat industry prospered, while also leading to rapid development of other cities.

The major agriculture products are potatoes, peppermint, hops, apples and hazelnuts (Oregon produces 95% of the country’s’ domestic hazelnuts). The wine industry became more important to the economy during the 1970’s as the soil and climate is ideal to produce similar varieties of grapes as the French region of Alsace and Burgundy. In the northeast region of Oregon dry land and irrigated wheat is farmed. The states farmers also produce cattle, sheep, dairy products, eggs and poultry.

The major employer in Oregon is the high tech and service industries since the 1970’s. The world headquarters of Nike are located near Beaverton. The state is famous for having one of the country’s premium salmon fishing industries.

Tourism plays a major role in the state with visitors flocking to see the evergreen mountain forests, pristine lakes, scenic beaches and waterfalls. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is a tourist draw card.
