Located in the Southeastern region of the U.S.A., South Carolina is home to 4.8 million residents. The state capital is Columbia which is also the largest and most populous city.

The province of South Carolina was one of the 13 colonies to declare independence from the British Crown during the American Revolution. The state was named to honor King Charles 1, Carolus is Latin for Charles.

South Carolina was the first state to vote to secede from the Union and was a founding state of the Confederate States of America. 46 counties are comprised to make up the state.

English settlers mostly from Barbados settled in the colony of Carolina in 1670. The French Huguenots then followed along with the Spanish. The English were threatened by their presence as their Roman Catholic monarchies were enemies to England and their value system.

To attract settlers fast to counter this, Carolina became one of the first colonies to grant liberty of religious practice and attracted Baptist, Quakers, Presbyterians and more Huguenots. Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition were encouraged also to settle as they were seen as reliable citizens.

Africans were the largest group and came mainly as slaves or indentured servants and were the majority of the population throughout the colonial period. Scots-Irish migrants that followed the Great Wagon Road settled in large numbers in the Carolina upcountry.

British traders spurred the South Carolina economy by conducting a booming Indian slave trade during 1670-1717. However an alliance between the tribes led to Yamasee War 1715-1717, where they attacked the settlers and threatened the continued existence of the colony. The Carolinas was split when settlers became dissatisfied with the Proprietors, and in 1719 South Carolina became a royal colony.

The South Carolina residents turned to using African slaves exclusively for their new commodity crops of rice and indigo crops.

In 1776 South Carolina became the first state to declare its independence from Great Britain and set up its own government. South Carolina became the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation which led to the creation of the United States of America. However in 1780 loyalists helped the British recapture the State from the rebels. The state became the 8th state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788.

South Carolina was the first state to declare its succession from the union in 1860. After the war the state was restored to the United States during Reconstruction which ended with the withdrawal of Union troops as part of the Compromise of 1877.

Tobacco, poultry, cattle, dairy products, soybeans and hogs are the major agricultural outputs of the state.

Textile goods, chemical products, paper products, machinery, automobiles and tourism are the major industrial outputs of South Carolina. The state was hit hard by the 2008 economic crisis and has the 5th highest unemployment rate in the country, at 11.5%.
